We were taught at Kirkmichael School that Whitefield Castle was built in the 11th century by King Malcolm Canmore as a hunting lodge. The hunting would have been deer hunting using deer hounds. Like so many castles there are is a legend of a secret tunnel to Ashintully Castle.
