Blairgowrie and Strathardle 1886

This book was copied  from hand written documents found in a box of books bought at an auction in Perth by Leslie Johnston of Kirkmichael in 1985. The papers claim to have been written by Mr John A MacDonald of Blairgowrie – and we know that a gentleman of the same name regularly contributed to local journals and in 1889 he published The History of Blairgowrie. The book contains various rhymes and poetry, but copied here is a description of various places in Strathardle, not necessarily in any travelling order.

Pictures of Strathardle can be found under galleries, and more documents under written word.

  • I have just read the above comments. The “Reminiscences” were written by my Grandfather’s brother, my Great Uncle James A Reid who sailed back to Scotland to meet his relatives that he’d not met before. My Great Grand Father , Peter Reid originally came from Moulin, married Mary Robb my Great Grandmother and they had nine children five boys and four girls. My Grandfather was sent back to the Royal Infirmary in Edinburgh to study Medicine. He ended up as Chief Quarantine Doctor for Sydney Harbour Australia .It was from J A Reid’s notes that John Macdonald set to verse.
