Kirkmichael Shops

There used to be several shops in the village, but over time these have dwindled. In 2016 there is just one shop which is community owned and provides the general store, post office and cafe. It provided fuel (unleaded and diesel) until 2015.

The Milne family ran the Kirkmichael Stores for 2 generations. John Milne shares his memories in the oral section; as does Jean Blair, whose husband, Jock, ran the garage in Kirkmichael; and Ian Keiro whose mother ran the Kirkmichael Post Office for some years. You can also click on their names to access their memories.

The pictures are in date order.

The owner of the shop was also known as "the general" due to the way the sign above the door was written.

  • Photographs would be taken in 1975. The person in the third one is not in fact stocking the shelves, she is a customer (Gladys Ogilvy who still stays three down from the old shop).
